1. Keep An Eye On Your Fluids
When having your vehicle serviced – and the times in-between – check all of your vehicle's fluids: brake, power steering, transmission, transaxle, and windshield washer fluids all play a major role in the safety of your vehicle.
2. Tire Care
Under or over-inflated tires can be hazardous… and also reduce your fuel efficiency. Be sure to check your tires regularly – and do so in the morning before traveling.
3. Lighting
Have your lighting system regularly checked: headlights, tail lights, and turn signals.
4. Engine Air Flow
Be aware of your air filtration system. Typically, air filters can be changed every other oil change. Reusable air filters with cleaning kits are also available. Maintaining a clear air filter will keep your vehicle performing optimally.
5. Your Battery
The older your battery is, the more prone you are to NOT being able to start your vehicle at an unexpected time. Also, be sure to keep the battery cables and posts clean -- removing any corrosion -- and battery fluid should also be checked and filled as needed, except for maintenance-free batteries.
6. Routine Servicing
In case you haven't noticed, routine servicing and constant awareness of your vehicle's condition is key to ensure safe operation. Be sure to schedule regular oil changes (recommended every 3,000 miles) and other servicing as suggested in the owner's manual.
7. Prepare, Just In Case
It may be wise to take precautions now... and be more prepared in case you are involved in an auto accident. It can be helpful to supply your vehicle with items such as: flashlights, common tools, tire repair equipment, flares, blankets, rags, jumper cables, etc.
Also, take into consideration when and where you'll be traveling. As an example... in the summer, pack some extra water if you'll be in remote areas.
